This is such a powerful coming of age story! As a school librarian, I read this book to approve it for purchase. It was definitely approved. There are so many topics to unpack in this book – self esteem, cultural diversity, friend relationships, peer pressure, social standing, criminal actions, and bullying just to name a few.

im an eleven year old and dont usually dont read stuff like i did in this book. i think when maleeka got chased, beat up, and burned down a clasroom, she learned that like Akeelma, she hd to accept her differences. she saved jjs butt, told char and the twins and sweets so many things, and got into varieties of trouble. later on, she realizes tht miss saunders is stubborn, but lets only her off the hook. she learns that like miss saunders, she has to accept her differences and rise above the highest and teach the ones in need. she learns that she has to act confident, to be and feel confident. i think char and the twins represent the bad influences in life and makeela represents the strong independent persons who learns to trust and love. i love how i can relate.
